February. The month of LOVE.
Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday. You know why? During this holiday, love is evident everywhere.
For those people who want to throw in an argument about how “love should always be evident” or “I love everyday”… calm down and here me out. There seems to be something contagious about a holiday that is intentional about celebrating love. You cannot escape the red and pink bliss wherever you go. You know what I even noticed? Valentine’s Day can turn out to be the least stressful of all holidays.
Valentine’s Day, of course, still has its stresses, BUT the focus still ends up pointing back to LOVE. Yes, there is room for argument about the difference between a real / true love and the performed romance we can see on Valentine’s Day, but that is for another post another time. I want to focus on the willful celebration of LOVE on February 14th.
I know you know that passage of scripture that goes like this:
Love is patient , Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth . It always protects, always trusts, always perseveres.
Focusing on this verse during the month of LOVE, I saw love differently.
Love is patient , Love is kind…
When you have a request for a 5AM shift for work. You have deadlines to complete, you’re suffering from the giggles, you spill hot tea all over your hand, then you are given an (impossible) scavenger hunt to complete minutes before your shift ends.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud..
When you it seems like other people have their lives together and you want a taste of their happiness. Yet, with perseverance and patience, opportunities begin to open up and your focus is renewed.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking , it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
When someone intends to show you tough love, but offends your character. Do you fight because you feel right? Do you respond with the same toughness they do? Honesty, calmness, and forgiveness can go a long way.
Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth….
When temptation arises and makes you question everything. In those moments, when you choose to surrender (not saying that it happens every time), God has a way of revealing the truth of your identity. Circumstances do not define you.
It always protects, always trusts, always preserves….
When friendships are tested. Eventually a smooth road develops potholes, but those holes can be refilled and the road made more durable. You look back at the sacrifices people make for you, and that builds trust, protects character, fuels perseverance.
That’s my month of LOVE.
I gained a new member into my family. My cousin Ava.
My sister-friend came to visit me and San Francisco. We had a uniquely good time.
